The book covers the entire history of the Generalitat de Catalunya, from its medieval origins to the present. It is divided into three blocks -medieval times, modern times and contemporary times- that include different chapters, each one written by a specialist in the field. The chapters corresponding to the medieval period follow two lines, one strictly chronological and the other on the study of the economy and the new taxation administered by the Generalitat. There are five chapters that analyze the evolution of the Diputación del General in the modern age, and the chapter entitled "Catalunya sense Generalitat" links the old Generalitat and the contemporary one, which is analyzed up to the year 2004. The publication of this book commemorates the six hundred fiftieth anniversary of the birth of the Generalitat de Catalunya.
